The Harvest is Plentiful.
Growing up, I always thought Harvest time was all about farming and food. In Church, Harvest Sunday meant bringing some tins or packets and setting them at the front. It felt like a nice tradition—saying thanks to God for what we have and sharing a bit with others.
There are so many passages to choose from in the Bible when it comes to Harvest however, I think one of the key ones is found in Matthew 9.
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew 9:37-38
As we look at the words in these verses it can be broken down, Jesus says that the Harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. He is not referring to the food, but He is talking about His people. In this passage, He is telling us that there are people ready to hear the good news - we just need to be willing to share.
To us, this should be an encouragement and also a challenge. Sometimes the young people you work with in BB aren’t all followers of Jesus, so our role is to share our story with them. Be encouraged that God is already at work in their lives, we just need to be there for them and to help them on their spiritual journey.
The challenge is that the workers are few. Sometimes the thought is that sharing your faith is someone else’s responsibility, that you couldn’t do it. Remember if you don’t feel ready, God is using you in His own way, He enables you to do what He created you for. As it says in Ephesians 2:10- For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. God doesn’t call the equipped He equips the called. We don’t have to do everything in our own strength; God will give us the tools to assist.
One of the most important ways that we can work in the lives of others is through prayer:
Take this challenge into your week – “Are you just praying for workers or are you willing to be one of the workers that Jesus calls for as harvesters in His field?”
