Written by LCC Community Trust (Lisburn Foodbank): "A Lifeline for the Community at Christmas"

At Christmas, many of us wake up to presents under the tree, a warm home, and a festive turkey dinner. It's a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for some in the community, this season can highlight the painful realities of poverty and hardship. Lisburn Foodbank is an essential lifeline for individuals and families who, through no fault of their own, find themselves struggling to make ends meet, particularly during the Christmas period.

The foodbank provides emergency food and support to those in crisis, helping to alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty that comes with living in poverty. For many, Christmas can be a time of increased financial strain. Families who are already facing challenges such as job loss, illness, or rising living costs can find themselves unable to afford basic necessities, let alone the luxury of holiday treats. The work of Lisburn Foodbank is crucial in addressing these needs, ensuring that no one has to go without food, warmth, or care during what should be a time of peace and goodwill.

Last year one of our clients who we supported throughout Christmas said:
“It was Christmas. And any other year I dreaded Christmas, the expense of it, and the expectancy of it.
And the whole lot that goes with it, instead of being a mom, enjoying Christmas with their family. I stressed the whole time. You guys this year, with the help from the hamper, the food, the normal shop the week before, the outlook of it all, that it's OK to say no to presents and giving out, the help with the electric, gas, everything.
My whole mindset changed this year. And it was like, my kids are happy no matter what they get.”
Volunteers at the foodbank work tirelessly to provide emergency food parcels, as well as essential items that help people through the season. These parcels often include not only the basics like pasta, milk, and vegetables, but also special Christmas treats such as festive foods, chocolates, and drinks. For many, receiving these extra items can make a significant difference in helping them feel included in the Christmas spirit, even when times are tough.

The foodbank is typically busier at Christmas time due to the increased demand for food and the extra pressure that the holiday season places on tight budgets. Many families have to choose between paying for heating, rent, or food, with little to spare for anything extra. Lisburn Foodbank’s role in this period becomes even more vital as it works with local churches, schools, businesses and community organisations to gather donations that can be used to support those most in need. These donations are vital for ensuring that the foodbank can meet the increased demand and provide a holiday meal to those who might otherwise go without. With so many more people struggling this year we have noticed our donations are down almost 20% compared to this time last year with demand for our services increasing by over 20% during the same period, so all support is greatly appreciated.
