Every Contact Leaves a Trace
Galatians 6:7-8
"Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life."
All of my life my daddy has said a phrase that I try and use in every situation - “Every contact leaves a trace”
It originally comes from the field of criminology, where it is used to suggest that every interaction leaves a mark, whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological. In the same way, every interaction we have with others leaves a spiritual trace. How we engage with people, what we say, and how we act, leaves a lasting impact—not just on those around us, but also on our relationship with God.
In this Scripture, Paul reminds us that the way we live, what we sow, will determine what we reap. Every choice, every word, every action leaves a spiritual “trace” that contributes to the harvest of our lives. When we sow seeds of love, kindness, patience, and grace, we are cultivating a relationship with God and others that bears eternal fruit. Conversely, sowing seeds of selfishness, pride, or anger will leave traces that lead to spiritual decay.
Jesus Himself showed us how to make every contact meaningful. He interacted with the sick, the broken, the lonely, and the rejected, and His touch always left a mark of healing and love. Our lives should reflect this same desire—to leave traces of Christ’s love in every relationship and every encounter we have with people.
Take a moment to reflect on the traces you are leaving in the lives of those around you. Do you leave a trace of encouragement, hope, and kindness? Or do your actions and words sow seeds of negativity, frustration, or indifference?
In your conversations, in your work, in your family life, in your ministries in Church, let your presence be one that leaves traces of Christ—traces of His love, His forgiveness, His peace. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you today, and remember that every encounter, no matter how small, is an opportunity to reflect God’s glory.
Each day is filled with opportunities to impact the world for Christ. Remember, every contact leaves a trace—so let that trace be a reflection of God’s love and power in your life.
As leaders in Boys’ Brigade we have an amazing opportunity to not only leave a Godly mark on the boys' lives but also on their families' lives. We are God’s ambassadors to this world, we are His representatives on the earth and how we represent Him to others will have eternal consequences.
Prayer: "Lord, help me to be mindful of the traces I leave behind in my interactions. May my words and actions reflect Your love and grace. Teach me to sow seeds of kindness, patience, and humility in every contact I make. Let the traces I leave be a testimony to Your goodness, and may my life draw others closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
